Pets Come First is a 501c (3) non-profit, primarily all-volunteer organization. Our mission is to facilitate the placement of stray and unwanted animals into loving homes. We are dedicated to ensuring responsible shelter management within our community, working together to eliminate the critical overpopulation of homeless, stray and abused animals. Educating our community on the importance of spaying and neutering all animals will decrease the number of surrendered and unwanted animals to area shelters and rescue groups. We work in partnership with other rescues, local & state police, Humane Officers, and Dog Law Enforcement Officers to provide monetary and voluntary resources to support and sponsor local animal programs within our community. We will offer emergency placement, food, and medical services for the pets of approved and responsible low-income families and senior citizens.
Working together with PSPCA since 2005, Pets Come First has assisted the shelter in decreasing the euthanasia rate from 87% to 0%. Due to our strong commitment and our volunteers we have successfully found foster homes, attended adoption events and transported to breed rescues. As of 2008 PSPCA Centre Hall Shelter is a no-kill facility.
Pets Come First has two main focuses: spaying/neutering and finding homes for homeless animals. Having an adoption center will help Pets Come First advance both of its goals. The adoption center will be open for adoptions four days a week.The other three days we will take in animals, transport them to local vets for medical care, evaluate behavior, and training. The facility will allow PCF to show pets available for adoption and will also serve as a base for long term spay/neuter assistance programs and low cost clinics.
In 2009 Pets Come First worked in partnership with the Hundred Cat Foundation (HCF) to develop a Trap/Neuter/Release (TNR) program in Centre County; it currently leases the house on the property and will continue to do so, offering low cost feral TNR clinics.
